In the intense debate over “choice,” whether the disagreement is when life begins or a woman’s right to her own body, the two sides will never reconcile. Given this fact, pro-choice advocates have wisely begun a different approach to promote their agenda and hopefully sway some undecided voters. That approach is as follows:
Right or wrong, abortions are here to stay. Young women intent upon exercising their personal “choice” will do so even if that choice is made illegal. While abortion remains a legal operation and a legitimate medical practice, we allow these women to choose openly without fear of punishment for what they do with their own bodies. However, banning the procedure will not prevent its occurrence. The only effect will be the seedy unlicensed individuals who pop up to take advantage of the opportunity, using coat hangers, ice picks and God knows what else. Instead of having a safe procedure performed by regulated medical doctors, women will be at the mercy of anyone who claims they can do the job the cheapest. Even more lives will be lost if these women are forced to put themselves at risk in order to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. On the other hand, preserving abortion’s legality will not affect any woman wishing to carry a fetus to term, because no one is ever required to have an abortion if they choose otherwise. To protect a woman’s choice and her right to be safe in doing so, abortions must remain a legal option.
This can be quite compelling, especially to those prone to emotion-based decisions. For that platform’s supporters, the principle itself is a valid one. Unfortunately, the same supporters who would cheer the above argument would boo the one below, thereby revealing a nasty double standard that sends liberals back to the drawing board.
Right or wrong, firearms are here to stay. Those intent upon exercising their 2nd amendment rights (which are actually in the Constitution) will do so even if that right is revoked. While the purchase and sale of firearms remain a protected personal choice and a legitimate business enterprise, law abiding citizens are permitted to arm themselves openly without fear of punishment for doing what the founding fathers expressly authorized. However, taking away that right will not cause guns to disappear from our society. The only effect will be the seedy unlicensed individuals who pop up to take advantage of the opportunity, via black market, underhanded dealings and God knows what else. Instead of having the safe, regulated exchange of firearms between ethical individuals, society will be at the mercy of the only people willing to break the law to obtain the weapons. Even more lives will be lost if honest families are forced to surrender their protection because these criminals are also willing to break laws concerning robbery, rape and murder. On the other hand, preserving 2nd amendment rights will allow concerned citizens to arm themselves against such other illegal acts, and since no one is required to possess a firearm if they choose otherwise, it will not affect people who disagree. To protect our freedom and maintain a defense against those who have no respect for any laws, the right to bear arms must remain intact.
